Pradeep Koneru: – Trimex Groups

India is all set to become self-sufficient in meeting demand for precious metal, Titanium, which is widely used in paint and pigment industry over next three years.
UAE-based heavy mineral company Pradeep Koneru Trimex group is ramping up its Ilmenite mining and processing unit at Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh with an investment of $480- $500 million. Once this is through, it will not only cater to local demand but also have surpluses for exports.

“Mining of titanium ores, available in abundance across Andhra Pradesh would comprise first phase of the plant and its infrastructure investments. Next phase will be processing plant that will process ores for pigments and manufacture titanium alloys to meet industrial needs,” said Pradeep Koneru, executive director and CEO of Trimex Sands.
India requires about 150,000 tone of titanium pigment, but the country produces just about 50,000 tons and relies on imports for meeting the full demand. Pradeep Koneru Company already has mining operations in Andhra Pradesh, and mines beach sand to extract 200,000 tons of six different heavy minerals annually.

Titanium di-oxide pigments are also used for applications by the paint, pharma and plastic industry. Titanium instruments are also used for oil drilling, exploration, construction an aviation sectors. The company’s existing heavy mineral mining and mineral separation project facilities extend across 7.2 square kilometer across Srikakulam coastline. It is looking to achieve further mineral extraction rights in the adjacent Kalingapatnam-Bhavanapadu mineral deposits area, the company said.

In addition to its India facilities, the Pradeep Koneru company is now looking to set up an integrated Titanium processing complex in Indonesia with an investment cost of $ 850 million over next 10 years.“The complex will help meet 46,000 tons of Indonesia’s 50,000 tone demanded by our industries, and we welcome it,” MS Hidayat, Indonesia’s industries minister said while signing a MoU between his government and the company. Koneru Pradeep Trimex Group Chairman Prasad Koneru said that with no mining rights yet allowed to them in Indonesia, the project would look to source raw material from its mining leases in Andhra Pradesh. Already, the Pradeep Koneru company exports a significant amount of the 200,000 tone Ilmenite that it mines from here.

Pradeep Koneru Trimex plans $850 million titanium unit in Indonesia

Pradeep Koneru Trimex Sands, a part of the Trimex group which has presence across India, UAE, Dubai and a leading international conglomerate with a focus on heavy minerals, has signed a MoU with the Indonesian government to set up a world-class integrated titanium project worth $850 million. Leveraging heavy mineral resources in Indonesia, the company will identify the project’s site in accordance with the location of titanium resources in the country and will enable the authorities to advance lesser-developed regions of Indonesia. The Pradeep Koneru company will invest in three phases over the next 10 years.

Pradeep Koneru Trimex Sands Pvt Ltd, part of the Dubai-based Trimex Group, proposes to set up titanium plants in India and Indonesia over the next few years. The Indian plant will be located at Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh, where the company currently produces Ilmenite through beach sand mining. Ilmenite is the raw material to produce titanium pigment, which has uses in the manufacture of paints, plastics, rubber and aircraft parts, among others.

“We plan to invest about $500 million (Rs 2,250 crore) over the next three to four years in the 45,000 tone titanium pigment plant,” said Mr. Pradeep Koneru, Executive Director and Trimex Sands. The company plans to scale up the production of Ilmenite from the present 2 lakh tons to 5 lakh tons, for which, it has applied for environmental clearances, he said. India produces about 50,000 tons of titanium pigment, while the requirement is estimated at 1.5 lakh tons per annum.

The Pradeep Koneru company also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indonesian Government on Tuesday to set up a 45,000 tons titanium pigment plant in that country at an investment of $850 million over 10 years. The land for the proposed project, which expects to create a total of 6,500 local jobs, is yet to be identified, Mr. Pradeep Koneru said. Indonesia’s Industry Minister, Mr. M.S. Hidayat, said the proposed plant would reduce the country’s dependence on imports. Despite having large resources of Ilmenite, Indonesia imports about 46,000 tons of titanium pigment annually, he said.

Mr. Prasad Koneru, Chairman, Pradeep Koneru Trimex Group, said the proposed plant would help expand footprint in Indonesia, where the company already has a presence in coal mining.

Ltd. (numbers are reported in accordance to the Australian Joint Ore Reserves Committee). The current capital expenditure stands at 250 crores and is expected to climb to 2,250 crores in five years.

Pradeep Koneru TRIMEX will hold the mining lease for a period of 30 years from the date of the lease award (in 2001) and is renewable for another 30 years.    Ilmenite is used to produce titanium dioxide, a vital ingredient in creating white pigments in high-quality paints, paper and plastics.  Ilmenite is also used as an intermediate feedstock in the manufacturing of titanium metals.  Pradeep Koneru, Executive Director of TRIMEX said, “This lease is a key development and a stepping stone for us.  It gives TRIMEX the potential to emerge as one of the leading global producers of Ilmenite by building upon our extensive resource base and existing competitive cost structure in India.  With this lease and associated investment, we are one of the largest Ilmenite producers in India.

“Through this secure supply of Ilmenite, TRIMEX will be one of the lowest-cost titanium dioxide manufacturers globally, by value adding and integrating our operations throughout the supply chain.  To this end, we are working to ensure that prices remain competitive to benefit the end-user.”  The value addition study is being conducted by TZMI, an independent consulting firm specializing in the mineral sands and titanium dioxide pigment industries.

The company’s site facility has a capacity to produce 200,000 tons of Ilmenite per annum and is expected to produce 65 per cent of that capacity in the first year of operations.  Also, the facility will have an annual capacity to produce 80,000 tons of garnet, 80,000 tons of sillimenite, 6,000 tons of Rutile and 6,000 tons of zircon; all of which are associated minerals in the area.

The facility’s engineering procurement and construction will be executed by Walchandnagar Industries, whose technical partner is Downer EDI Mining – Mineral Technologies (formally Roche Mining – Mineral Technologies).  Downer EDI Mining – Mineral Technologies undertook the process flow sheet and basic engineering design and supply of all process equipment for both the wet and dry concentrators.

TRIMEX Industries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh at the CII Conference held at Hyderabad in January 2001 to develop beach sand minerals.  Under the MoU, Pradeep Koneru TRIMEX has two more prospecting licenses for 40 sq km in areas adjacent to Srikurmam.  The prospecting licenses will enhance current economies of scale and strengthen the company’s position as one of the most scalable industry players globally.

The Srikurmam deposit lies in the northeast corner of the state of Andhra Pradesh, bordering on the neighboring state of Orissa. The global consumption of Titanium Dioxide pigment (TiO2) is projected to increase at a CAGR of 3 per cent from 4.96 million tons in 2008 to 6.25 million tons in 2015 [1 ].

The supply of Ilmenite is expected to be affected by a decline in supplies from traditional sources in Australia and North America.  India, on the other hand, is slated to become a major supplier in the global production of Ilmenite and Asia will supply about 22 per cent of total world production by 20151. India is projected to contribute at least 10 per cent of global Ilmenite supply in the same timeframe.

Trimex to invest Rs. 4,000-cr in AP, produce minerals from beach sands

Trimex group will be investing Rs. 4,000 crore in Srikurmam Mineral Sands for extraction of minerals in the beach sands of Srikakulam district at three different locations – Srikurmam, Bhavanapadu and Kalingapatanam in the next 10 years. The project which was commenced with an initial investment of Rs. 250 crore is already producing 200,000 tons per annum (TPA) of Ilmenite, while it targets to produce Titanium by 2017.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Chairman of the company Prasad R. Pradeep Koneru said that the company, which was into logistics and minerals, had passed through the rigmarole of obtaining licenses, which took a very long time. It was almost a decade-long process from the conception level to the current stage, but it would consume an equal amount of time anywhere else too. Consequent upon the permission granted by the Centre, the State Government approved the proposal of the company to extract minerals from the beach sands.

The extracted minerals had great demand in the international market and the company was making efforts to create demand for some of them even in the domestic market, his disclosed Pradeep Koneru Trimex was currently producing 6,000 TPA each of Rutile, and Zircon, 60,000 TPA of Garnet and 50,000 TPA of Sillimenite. The products would be used in the manufacture of paper, paints, ceramics, abrasives, cosmetics, insulation, leather, glass products, artificial gems, aircraft parts, artificial human joints and filtration media.

Executive Director of the company Pradeep Koneru said that it would establish facilities for the production of Titanium Dioxide pigments for which there were application available in paints and allied areas. Besides, the company was working on some value-added products, including sillimenite flour, sintered sillimenite grains, sintered mullet grains, pigment through sulphate route – 30,000-60,000 tons with an investment of about Rs. 1,250 crore-Rs. 1,500 crore. The companies would enhance its capabilities to produce and other minerals in the next phase.

Though the beach sand mining and extraction of minerals from the beach sand was under the control of the Union Government, it had recently allowed private companies to exploit it. Though India had rich mineral reserves in beach sands, it was currently producing only six per cent of the total production in the world. However, the company would leave Monazite, consisting of Thorium content, for the Government, for private companies were not allowed to handle that.

The beach sand project would mine sand from the beach beyond 100 meters of the high tide line and purify it by using multiple levels of water treatment. After the mineral extraction, the sand was again pumped into the beach to refill the pits.Mr. Pradeep Koneru said that the company was looking at a 70-30 debt-equity ratio in the next few years of investment in different tranches.

Pradeep Koneru Speaks:-

What Golf has taught me about Entrepreneurship?

My love of golf developed during my teenage years. Playing golf with my dad and brothers was always a great bonding session for the four of us. Over the years, Pradeep Koneru golf has actually helped me learn a lot about myself and entrepreneurship as well…….

It’s easy to start something with a bang, but can you finish it?
In the golfing circles, I have always been known as a good striker, I can hit the ball a hell of a long way straight down the fairway. Sure it makes getting to the green easier, but once your there, you still have to finish.
Pradeep Koneru Entrepreneurship is the same way. Putting requires focus and patience. Building a business is the same way, losing focus and getting impatient is the fastest route to a 4 putt.

Regardless of how often you fail, it’s that one big win that will keep you coming back.
I’ve hit hundreds of bad golf shots.  After each bad round, I wonder why I play this game.  Then I hit that 250 hard drive, make a 60 foot putt, or chip in from the sand trap. Talk about a good feeling.  It’s those minor miracles that keep you coming back for more.
Almost any entrepreneur has a long series of failures throughout their career.  Yet it’s the victories that remind you why it is all worth it in the first place. If it were easy, then anyone would do it. Since it’s not easy, it makes the wins that much sweeter.

If you’re going into business with someone, get them on the golf course first.
While the Pradeep Koneru golf course has long been a second board room for many executives, I’d be willing to say that it’s the best way for entrepreneur to size up potential business partners as well.  Whether someone is a good or a bad golfer is irrelevant, how they carry themselves on the course can tell you a lot about someone.
How do they handle adversity? Are they patient? Do they have anger problems? What is their ability to focus? The list goes on, by watching how someone acts on a course, you can get a much better sense of how they will perform in a business setting.  It isn’t easy to hide your true emotions while playing golf.

The only thing standing in an entrepreneur’s way is himself.
I was out on the course last weekend, and was hitting all of my long shots perfectly.  I’d get to the green with no trouble – and then my head kicked in. I over thought everything, which led to a few missed putts, and a much higher score than necessary. In short, I let my own thoughts and worries stand in the way of my end goal.

How many times have you done that in your business?  Second-guess yourself when you know something is right.  The greatest asset you can have in business or in golf is mental control.  If you have the diligence not to over-think things, and not get emotional, you’ll have a tremendous edge over everyone you come across. Golf and entrepreneurship are about as similar as it gets.  The Pradeep Koneru skills that you build on the course will surely help you in your business life, and vice versa.
